Click en "Atrás" en la barra para regresar al aquí)<br /></div><div align="justify"></div>.<br /><span style="font-size:180%;"><strong><span style="color:#cc0000;"><a href="http://bibliodelcente-cali-ntc.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html">Biblioteca del Centenario</a>.</span><br />100 años al servicio de la cultura en Cali</strong> </span><br /><br /><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;"><strong><span style="color:#cc0000;">Transcurría el año de 1910</span></strong> cuando la modernidad de las grandes ciudades se hacía sentir. Santiago de Cali no era indiferente a dicha modernidad, y junto a ella estaba el crecimiento poblacional, que imponía nuevas tendencias y exigencias. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;">.<br />Para entonces Cali solo contaba con veinte mil habitantes, lo que la convertía en una provincia llena de esperanza y expectativa. En ese año la ciudad se plantea la celebración del primer centenario de la proclamación de la independencia como acontecimiento de perdurable recordación. El gobierno del departamento, el clero, el concejo municipal, la Junta de Ornato, las sociedades de medicina, la jurisprudencia, los artesanos y todos los habitantes contribuyeron a solemnizar los actos y dar realce a las festividades.</span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;">.<br />Se constituyó, entonces, la <strong>Junta Departamental del Centenario</strong> para organizar las festividades en el departamento. Fueron sus miembros los señores Oswaldo Scarpetta, Evaristo García, Juan de Dios Borrero y Mario de Caicedo y el General Lucio Velasco. <strong><span style="color:#cc0000;">Esta junta aprobó el <span style="color:#000000;">24 de abril de 1910</span> la propuesta del señor Oswaldo Scarpetta de fundar una biblioteca pública en Cali como un digno homenaje a los Padres de la Patria.</span></strong> Para ese tiempo se había constituído en Bogotá la Biblioteca Nacional, y los humanistas de aquellos días conocían la importancia de poner a disposición de la comunidad los libros como instrumentos de superación y entretenimiento, transformadores de la vida personal y social. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;">.<br />Los anales de la historia nos recuerdan que la prensa local ­como el Correo del Cauca, el Correo del Valle, El Día, La Idea Liberal, El Doctrinario, La Instrucción Popular y El Obrero - registró cada acontecimiento en que se plasmó la constitución de espacios públicos e institucionales que hoy, cien años después, son motivo de orgullo. <strong><span style="color:#cc0000;">La <a href="http://bibliodelcente-cali-ntc.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html">Biblioteca del Centenario </a>cumple cien años de historia, cultura y educación, y se convierte en parte de nuestro patrimonio como vallecaucanos. </span></strong></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;">.<br />La historia da cuenta de que el 20 de julio de 1910 llegó el momento que todos esperaban. A las ocho de la mañana tuvo lugar la instalación de la Biblioteca del Centenario, solemne acto en el edificio de la gobernación; en la ceremonia el ilustre Mario de Caicedo lee un discurso en nombre de la Junta Departamental del Centenario. Las autoridades, las corporaciones y el público cautivo se dirigieron en célebre desfile a la iglesia de San Pedro, donde se celebró la misa con la Reverenda Comunidad Franciscana después de los acordes del himno patrio.<br /><br />Paralelo a la <strong><span style="color:#cc0000;"><a href="http://bibliodelcente-cali-ntc.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html">Biblioteca del Centenario</a></span></strong>, en los actos conmemorativos, otras instituciones hacen su aparición, como la Cámara de Comercio de Cali y la Sociedad de Mejoras Públicas. En la noche de aquel majestuoso día, en el cual cada acto cultural y cívico evocó las hazañas de los Padres de la Patria, se realizaron tenidas musicales y poéticas acompasadas con diversidad de viandas que reflejaban la riqueza multiétnica del naciente departamento. Valses, pasillos, y bambucos fueron interpretados magistral­mente por músicos de la época, que alegraron el amanecer la inolvidable fecha que abrió otro capítulo en la historia de la ciudad. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;">.<br />Un hecho de gran connotación fue la creación del departamento del Valle del Cauca con Santiago de Cali como capital. Mediante decreto 386 de 30 de abril de 1910 el Presidente Ramón González Valencia y su ministro de Gobierno Miguel Abadía Méndez designaron como primer Gobernador del Valle del Cauca al médico caleño Pablo Borrero Ayerbe, quien venía desempeñándose como Gobernador de Cali. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;">.<br />En estas festividades, que duraron días, se canta por primera vez el Himno a Cali, compuesto por el poeta Ricardo Nieto. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;">.<br />Bajo la dirección de Bias Scarpetta y con una donación inicial de ochocientos. volúmenes generosamente entregados por el Instituto Literario de Cali, la Biblioteca del Centenario abrió sus puertas a la comunidad en la Casa Municipal, local que le fue asignado por el Cabildo con carácter de perpetuidad mediante el acuerdo Número 14 del 28 de noviembre de 1910. Aquí funcionó hasta 1918, cuando fue demolida esta edificación para construir en su lugar el </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;">,<br />Palacio Nacional. Ese mismo año se trasladó a la Carrera 5a con Calle 7a, donde dispuso de alguna amplitud hasta 1965, cuando tuvo que compartir el local con la Universidad Santiago de Cali, que en 1976 desplazó la biblioteca luego de 58 años de servicio a la comunidad. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;">,<br />Hasta 1980 la colección se archivó en sótanos del CAM, donde sufre inundaciones y saqueos.
